For those who missed it…Posted: 09.02.2010
This is a copy of the newsletter I sent out last month. Stand by: the September newsletter is coming this Monday…and it’s gonna be a good one!
From the August Newsletter…
As a missionary to the city of Austin, which is the easiest way to understand what I’m doing, I thought it would be fun to give everyone some quick facts, upcoming events, some updates on how you can be involved in the work God is doing, and some resources that have been encouraging in my first two months as a missionary. So let’s get started…
-Austin produces more blogs than any other city in the US
-Almost half of Austin, ages 18-35, do not live in a family setting
-About 37% of Austin claims a Christian affiliation
-The Austin Stone Community Church is one of the fastest growing churches in America
-The unemployment rate in Austin is 1.2% higher than the national average
-Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation
-Yesterday (8/8) we started our second New Leader Training. This is a four week commitment for those interested in being trained to lead a Missional Community, and 75 people came! The reason this is so significant is because of the implications these groups will hopefully have on the city and the nations. As one of the fastest growing cities, we hope these groups will impact the lives of those people moving here, and that they may some day return to their home town with the gospel. So, please join us in praying for these groups and the lives that will be changed.
-The Austin Leadership Institute is changing its name to Austin Stone Institute. This will require a change in how the support cards are filled out. If you still have a card that I sent you, you can continue to use it through August.
-I have attached a pdf of the NEW support card which has the new instructions on it. Please download the new cards, for future support.
-For account #, write “ASI-140”
-Make checks out to “The Austin Stone Community Church”
-Finally, please remember not to include my name on the check
Below are some resources that I have been studying lately that I encourage you to check out.
-Field Guide to Neighborhood Outreach from a collective team, on how to engage and serve your neighbors
-The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert Coleman, on how Jesus trained His disciples and the example we should follow
-Total Church by Tim Chester and Steve Timmis, an incredible book on why churches must have community and must be on mission
-A Praying Life by Paul Miller, a transformational book on the power of prayer
-Valley of Vision, a collection of Puritan prayers that humbles you by the incredible love they had for our Savior
-Podcasts (sermons) from John Piper, Tim Keller, and Matt Chandler always enlighten, encourage, and convict (search by name in the iTunes store)
-Please pray for my immediate and extended family, as my great aunt, Liz, passed away yesterday. She was always fun, a great storyteller and host, she always had a deep interest in whoever she was speaking with, and she will be missed.
-Also, I will be teaching a baptism class for those in our church that would like to be baptized, that they might understand what we believe it signifies and why we do it. Please pray over this opportunity, specifically that God would be glorified through the class.
-Please also pray that God would continue to be faithful in providing for us financially. He is good.
I can’t tell you enough how grateful Margaret and I are for your continued support and prayers, you have all been such a blessing to us. We can’t wait to see what God does over the next year, and to praise Him with you along the way!
